August 2008 – DEWALT, a leading manufacturer of industrial power tools, announced its national search for the Top 17 Finish Carpenters. Finish carpenters nationwide were encouraged to showcase their precision, craftsmanship and woodworking skills in the Top 17 Contest.
Contestants competed for a chance to win more than $4,000 in DEWALT power tools and accessories among other prizes. This announcement of the contest was tied with the launch of the new DW717 10" sliding miter saw, which provides improved accuracy and a high level of precision.
The first phase of contest began on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 and officially launched at the International Woodworking Fair (IWF) in Atlanta.
Finish carpenters were invited to submit a plan to build a project in one of three categories: mantles, built-in cabinets, or

custom stairs. Users also submitted three images of prior work in that chosen category.
During the second phase of the contest, (September 26, 2008), DEWALT representatives selected the Top 17 finalists. They received a DEWALT tool package worth more than $2,000, which will include a DW717 miter saw and other essential woodworking tools to use while building their projects.
These Top 17 finalists had a profile on DEWALT.com/Top17 where they showcased their skills by posting their projects during the build phase of the contest. Online visitors were able to view the progression of each carpenter
Online visitors were then able to vote on their favorite project the one with the most votes was named the DEWALT Top Finish Carpenter in December 2008.
The winner received more than $4,000 in DEWALT tools and accessories, the DEWALT Race Experience at a 2009 NASCAR® event, and a Carhartt Gear Prize Pack.
